Candles, explained — not sold
Section 03
Cold throw, hot throw, and the chemistry that explains why a candle that smells brilliant in the shop can go quiet when it is lit.
Lift the lid on an unlit candle and the scent hits you immediately. Light it, and that same scent might bloom into something richer — or fade into almost nothing. These are not the same phenomenon, and they are not caused by the same things.
A candle that smells vivid when you light it and ghostly an hour later isn't necessarily failing — but the reason it fades matters.
Candle fragrance descriptions are written to sell, not to inform. Here is a more useful vocabulary for what you are actually smelling.
You light a candle, enjoy it for twenty minutes, then stop noticing it. The candle hasn't changed — your nose has.
